Canolfan Genedlaethol i Gerddoriaeth Gwerin Cymru / National Centre for Welsh Folk Music
Tŷ Siamas, Dolgellau

This week sees the opening of an exciting new project, the National Centre for Welsh Folk Music, at Tŷ Siamas, Neuadd Idris,in the town square in Dolgellau, Gwynedd. It is the fruition of many years of planning and months of hard work to establish a permanent exhibition of the history and development of Welsh Folk music through interactive multimedia displays, recordings, and workshops. There is also a Performance auditorium, recording studio, café bar and shop. The centre will stage Folk music events throughout the year, and will play a central part in the SESIWN FAWR weekend, July 20/21st.

The opening ceremony is on June 14th, with the keys of the centre being presented to Dr.Meredydd Evans, and a procession through the town by local children and musicians. Check the website – www.tysiamas.com, for further details and programme of events to come.

We are delighted to be involved with Ty Siamas, as, together with Siop Eifionydd, Porthmadog, Cerdd Ystwyth Music will be supplying the shop with musical Instruments, sheet music and accessories. We're sure it will be well worth a visit, if you're in the area.

August

We will be on the field in Swansea for the Eisteddfod Genedlaethol / National Eisteddfod from Saturday August 5th until Saturday the 12th. Our stand is in the Neuadd Arddangos / Exhibition Hall, which is located between the main entrance and the pavillion.
We're looking forward to meeting both old and new customers and hope you will call in to see us if you're at the Eisteddfod.

December / Rhagfyr

As we run into the week before Christmas, we’re delighted that, as we predicted, the new albums by 3 Welsh artists are proving hugely popular. In a major scoop, the CDs by Katherine Jenkins, Bryn Terfel and Aled Jones occupy the first 3 positions in the Classic FM Best selling charts for the month, with previous CDs by Katherine and Aled also featuring, and music by Karl Jenkins, his “Requiem“ and “The Armed Man” in the top 10. Catrin Finch fronts the “Whats on“ section, and the magazine forecasts the pairing of Bryn Terfel and Angela Gheorghiu in the Royal Opera House production of “Tosca” in June 2006 to be the major Operatic event of the year .
Check the Latest Stock section for other very recent releases, by Catrin Finch Meinir Gwilym and Sian James, and some new books.

We’re still despatching orders as we receive them, but obviously we cannot guarantee pre Christmas delivery at this point, as we’re dependant on the GPO and Amtrak performing their parts in the delivery process. Happily, there have been few hold ups so far, (and those have occurred at the destination, rather than this end); and we try to follow up on any delays.
We’ll be closing at 3pm on Xmas Eve, reopening on December 29th till the 31st, closed January 1st and 2nd, back to normal on Jan.3rd. We’re looking forward to next year, and would like to thank all our customers, both in the Shop, and via phone and Internet (in increasing numbers), for their support through the year. For now,

NADOLIG LLAWEN A BLWYDDYN NEWYDD DDA I BAWB
HAPPY CHRISTMAS, AND A HAPPY NEW YEAR TO ALL

Tachwedd/November

The last few months have been hectic, with the beginning of the new school and college year, very busy both in the shop and with increasing mail and Internet orders, so there has been little time to update the website. Now there is a distinct feel of Christmas on the way, with people looking for presents. Check our “Latest Stock” for important new CD and book releases, that would make ideal Christmas presents .
We’ve also got new lines in smaller sized guitars, which we’re often asked about at this time of year, including this years favourite colour, Pink; also the new style Metal Axe guitars and Basses, which are both eye-catching, and great to play . With regards Guitar and Amp Starter packs , instead of offering one standard pack, we put together the guitar and amp YOU chose, with 10% off the 2 items together, plus strap , lead and other extras for free. So phone or email us for details, as soon as possible, to guarantee the choice of colour, as our suppliers run out closer to Christmas. Ask as well about Guitar tuners, FX pedals, gigbags, music cases etc., as these are not all in the Shopping Basket system.
We’ve got an expanding range of Musical Gifts in stock, including Crackers, Games etc ,and lots of unusual and useful Gift ideas, so contact us for more information. We try to dispatch all orders ( for items in stock ) within 24 hours, but for guaranteed Next Day delivery, we must receive the order by phone or online by 11am.

July 2005

Summer's festivals are in full swing and following on from the International Eisteddfod in Llangollen last week, Sesiwn Fawr is in Dolgellau this weekend, July 15th and 16th. The headline band is Super Furry Animals, but there will be nearly 30 other bands and musicians playing. If you can't be there, it's all broadcast on S4C digital TV & Radio Cymru.

Mai / May 2005

It was with great sadness that we heard of the death of Siwsann George recently. Her immense contribution in bringing Welsh folk music to a wider audience, both as a solo singer, and as a member of the group Mabsant will always be valued. Fortunately, she can be remembered through her recordings, as her album “Caneuon Traddodiadol Cymru / Traditional Songs of Wales “ was reissued a few months ago, and her recordings with Mabsant are still available.

We’re preparing to go to Cardiff for Eisteddfod yr Urdd, where we’ll have a stand for the week. It’s the first time for it to be held in a city centre, in the heart of Cardiff Bay, where the Urdd headquarters are now permanently based in the Millenium Centre. The site is quite extensive, and we are at stand 70 / 71, in the area beyond the Millenium Centre itself, near to the Funfair and Tesco’s Food Hall. The nearest entrance to us is no.3, at the northern end of the site, but some roads will be closed to traffic during the week. We look forward to meeting up with both old and new friends and customers.

Check the Latest Stock section for details of new publications.

If you've ever wondered why Wales is called the "land of song", The National Library of Wales's summer exhibition will aim to answer your question. Click here for details of the 'Encore!' exhibition....

Ebrill / April 2005

The National Library of Wales / Llyfrgell Genedlaethol Cymru, Aberystwyth is to hold a major exhibition this summer, called “Encore- Cerddoriaeth yng Nghymru / Music in Wales“ to run from May 3rd until October 29th, more details of which we will be giving nearer to the time of the exhibition. The National Library holds the most important collection of the earliest Welsh musical manuscripts, also of historical pictures and Sound Archives, and there will be other material on loan from St Fagans, The Museum of Welsh Life, near Cardiff, which also has an extensive collection of early music and instruments.
There will be a presentation by Rhidian Griffiths about the Music Collections in the Library , on May 4th at 1pm, and other events are being planned including concerts and workshops. We will be having a small display of instruments there, and as part of it we hope to have a section with contact details for instrument makers, and some examples of Welsh instruments such as Crwth, Telyn /Harp, and Pibgorn that are being made by them today.
We would welcome contact from anyone involved in Instrument making in Wales. We’ll also have contact details for the organisations involved with Traditional music throughout Wales, and we’ll be keeping these details on our website, for future reference, as we get many enquiries about Welsh traditional music . We’ve updated the Festivals of Wales list for 2005 , and would appreciate notification of any errors or omissions, or news of any new Festivals this year.

(Our apologies for the delay with news, and also for some disruption to the site for a short period in March, when systems were upgraded.)

Cyfarchion Dydd Gwyl Dewi i Bawb St.David's Day Greetings to Everyone.

Dec/Rhagfyr

We've been exceptionally busy over the last few weeks and so we are late with our gift suggestions - But - gifts are welcomed all the year round. So if you're looking for a present (maybe the one you forgot before christmas?) we have lots with musical themes, i.e:-

Mugs, chopping boards, tea towels, aprons, shopping bags, stationary etc,

Useful items that are always appreciated are:-

Music cases, metronomes, guitar tuners, gig bags etc.

Three of the most popular CDs nationally are from Welsh artists - Aled Jones "Christmas Album", Katherine Jenkins "Second Nature" and Bryn Terfel "Silent Noon" and we're sure this will continue after Christmas. Books of Welsh Christmas music have been requested and sent to many
countries, especially "Boed Noel" and "Clywch Llu'r Nef".

Guitar and amplifier packages, especially the Fender "Mini" guitas and basses have been sent out all over the country and, again, these are popular as all year-round presents, especially as we offer next-day delivery for items in stock (up to Dec 23rd, as we are dependant upon
our carriers terms and after January 4th 2005). Our apologies to anyone who has had a delayed e-mail response and we'd like to thank all our customers, both in the shop and all round the world, for your support through another interesting and challenging year.
